Bernice Buhagiar

"Every artist dips his brush in his own soul, and paints his own nature into his pictures."

Henry Ward Beecher

BIO

Bernice Buhagiar's paintings reflect an inner explosion of emotions, moods and other influences faced in everyday life. Her inspiration is derived from seasons and nature to people's characters, from landscapes to stories and tales.

Bernice showed love for art from a very young age. Following private Art lessons and those in Secondary School, as well as  several courses in the Malta Society of Arts, her paintings have developed a unique and personal style.

Bernice's paintings and drawings vary from landscapes to Maltese heritage, but mostly consist of the human figure. Bernice is deeply amazed by the human anatomy and its line.   She is inspired from Van Gogh, Degas, Munch, Monet, Caravaggio, Botticelli, Rubens, Klimt and Dali. She also believes that sometimes giving just an impression is more stunning rather than putting the whole subject into light. Thus the play of shadow and light is visible in her paintings, where the figure is almost engulfed by the darkness apart from the brightly lit areas which suggest the human pose.

She finds acrylic paint best for her style because it is quick-drying and bold, and this enables her to keep the mood and feeling of the painting as fresh as possible. She makes use of different media, such as broken mirror and ceramic, coloured glass, newspaper and wood. She loves exploring printing techniques and different textures to make her paintings richer and more interesting to the eye.

One could feel from viewing Bernice's paintings the strong emotional vibe coming from the source of colour, texture, shadow and light and the subject itself. Thus making the below statement alive:

"If I could say it in words, there'd be no reason to paint." Edward Hopper
